The new COVID-19 coronavirus is taking world economies to a complete halt. There is a global shutdown of industries, restaurants, and stores across the world. People are self-isolating themselves to prevent the contraction of this deadly virus. Although little information is known about the virus, the cure rests in the hands of vaccination or antidote for the already infected.
What Is The New Coronavirus?
The coronavirus has been declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization, UN. The virus is a respiratory syndrome that attacks the lungs and causes asymptomatic or flu-like symptoms such as high fever, dry cough, shortness of breath, or muscle pain. Further developments can lead to severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, and death. The death toll is around 3-5 %. But it varies from country to country, based on a nation’s healthcare system.
How Does It Spread?
Transmission of the virus is through respiratory droplets that people inhale when others are, for instance, coughing or sneezing. The infection can quickly spread through direct contact of droplets that are present on surfaces for a short time, while it may also exist and be viably contagious from cardboard, glass, or plastic surfaces.
It isn’t yet known how long the virus can survive outside a host, but, in most other viruses, it ranges from a couple of hours to months. Transmission is of particular concern on transport, where droplets containing the coronavirus could pass between passengers via surfaces like armrests and airplane seats. The period of incubation for the coronavirus, the length of time before symptoms appear, is in between one and fourteen days.
How Can You Avoid It?
Viruses that spread quickly usually come with much lower mortality rates and vice versa. As the virus is an entirely new strain, it’s believed that there currently is no existing immunity in anyone that it will encounter. Although some levels of resistance will naturally develop over time, it still means that those with compromised immune systems, such as the sick or elderly, are most at risk of becoming severely ill or dying from the virus.
In terms of self-protection and preventing the virus, experts commonly agree that it is essential to wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap; cover your face with a tissue or elbow while coughing or sneezing. It’s important to visit a doctor if you have symptoms. While face masks are popular, scientists doubt in their effectiveness against severe airborne viruses. Masks may provide some protection to you and significant others, but because they are so loose and made of permeable material, droplets can still easily pass through. Multiple countries have asked and advised the people traveling back from China to self-quarantine themselves for at least a period of 14 days.
What Does This Breakout Truly Mean?
The coronavirus breakout has created a severe case of unrest and internal domestic upheavals that have decimated public co-habitation and given rise to economic tension. The virus has entered into catastrophic phases in so many stable economic 1st world countries. The only saving grace is that there are recovery and international cooperation between nations to combat this ill crisis. As for the citizens, they must isolate themselves, keep their environment clean, and get help as soon as they see signs of infection.
